This 10,000 square foot home on the intracoastal waterway was one of our longest, most challenging, but energizing projects. We completed all the exterior window and door trim, piling wraps, ceilings and beams. We installed the large mahogany entrance doors, with transoms, and side lights. Our team placed the 1 x 8 cypress boards in the kitchen, office and a very large recreation area over the garage, and 1 x 6 poplar T&G in the stair tower, upstairs hall and sitting area. The master bedroom ceiling and master bath as well as the pool bath walls were finished with 3½ inch beaded board in both poplar and heart pine topped off with a piece of crown. One of our favorite tasks was securing the 24 foot cypress beams that we fabricated to support a light blue painted 1 x 6 V-groove in this home’s impressive kitchen, and completing it all with large multi-piece window, door and base moldings.
This custom built home in Oldwick, New Jersey was designed by Stuart Barrett using visions from Richardson Brognard Okie, a well known architect in that part of the country, to resemble a late 19th century farmhouse. We were asked by Brian Cahill, the general contractor (and the same contractor who oversaw the intracoastal home in Wilmington) to temporarily set up shop in New Jersey to tackle the intricate trim work this project required. This home was full of 1 x 6 T&G wall and ceiling boards. Some were beaded and some were V-groove poplar and pine. 1 x 3 beaded poplar and heart pine were used throughout the house. We constructed large white oak beams in the living room and in the craft area. In the kitchen were placed reclaimed beams that were from an old Pennsylvania mill. These beams were 8 x 8, 17 feet long, evenly spaced across the ceiling and incorporated into the cabinets. We also used a small piece of a beam to create a shelf over the stove. All the mill work was done by Virginia-based Gaston and Wyatt.
This project involved a master bedroom, bathroom, walk-in cedar closet full of built-in shelves, and a long hall to connect the addition to an existing home and the outside. The ceilings were covered with 1 x 6 T&G V-groove and 4 x 8 beams running into a large 6 x 12 ridge beam in the master bedroom.
